Brumby Hall UGA Death

The University of Georgia (UGA) community is grieving the loss of two students who tragically passed away in unrelated incidents last week.

Laken Hope Riley, a nursing student, was discovered deceased at the UGA Intramural Fields on Feb. 22, and Wyatt Banks, a business student, was found deceased in Brumby Hall on Feb. 21.

Both deaths are under investigation as homicides, and authorities have apprehended a suspect in connection to Riley’s passing.

Laken Hope Riley: A “Sweet and Compassionate Soul”

Laken Hope Riley, aged 22, was a junior at the Augusta University College of Nursing and a distinguished student on the dean’s list. Initially starting her college journey at UGA, she forged numerous friendships and became a member of the Alpha Delta Pi sorority.

Remembered as a “sweet and compassionate soul” who “brought so many people together and developed so many friendships” by her former roommate Bianca Tiller.

Riley was reported missing by a friend after failing to return from a jog at the UGA Intramural Fields on Feb. 22. Her remains were discovered in a wooded area behind Lake Herrick, exhibiting “visible injuries” indicating foul play.

UGA Police Chief Jeff Clark disclosed that Riley succumbed to blunt force trauma, clarifying that the suspect, Jose Antonio Ibarra, 26, was a stranger to her. “I believe this was a crime of opportunity where he encountered an individual, and unfortunate events unfolded,” Clark remarked. Ibarra faces multiple charges, including malice murder, kidnapping, and false imprisonment.

Riley’s untimely demise has deeply saddened her family, friends, and the UGA community. A GoFundMe page has been established to cover her funeral expenses and establish a scholarship in her memory.

Tributes honoring her have flooded social media, with friends sharing cherished memories and photos. Lilly Steiner, a UGA friend, expressed gratitude to Riley in an Instagram post for “helping me find the joy in life”.

Wyatt Banks: A “Bright Light” and a “Leader”

Wyatt Banks, aged 20, was a sophomore at the UGA Terry College of Business and a member of the Sigma Chi fraternity. Hailing from Marietta, Georgia, he graduated from Walton High School in 2022. Remembered as a “bright light” and a “leader” by his family, friends, and mentors.

Banks was discovered deceased in his dorm room at Brumby Hall on Feb. 21. The UGA Police Department confirmed that the cause and manner of his passing are still under investigation, with no indication of foul play or threat to the campus community. A GoFundMe campaign organized by his fraternity brothers disclosed that he passed away by suicide.

Banks’ passing has evoked an outpouring of sorrow and support from loved ones and the UGA community. A candlelight vigil held in his honor at the Sigma Chi house on Feb. 23 provided an opportunity for friends and family to share anecdotes and prayers.

Jennifer Brown, his high school teacher, lauded him as “one of the most amazing young men” she ever taught, highlighting his “huge heart” and “great sense of humor”. His fraternity brother, Jack Dwyer, hailed him as “the best friend anyone could ask for” and praised his selflessness.

A Time of Healing and Support

The UGA community is navigating a challenging period of healing and adjustment following the tragic losses of two students within one week. UGA President Jere W. Morehead conveyed his heartfelt condolences in a statement, announcing the cancellation of classes on the Athens campus on Feb. 23 and the availability of resources to aid those in need of support.

Solidarity and support have been evident within the UGA community in response to the tragedies. Students, faculty, and staff have expressed sympathy and solidarity on social media, employing hashtags like #UGAStrong and #PrayForUGA.

Many have offered assistance or a listening ear to those grappling with difficulties. Some have also advocated for heightened awareness and action concerning mental health and campus safety matters.

The passing of Laken Hope Riley and Wyatt Banks has left an irreplaceable void in the hearts of many, yet their legacies of love, kindness, and companionship endure. They will be fondly remembered and dearly missed by their families, friends, and the UGA community.
