Wendy Williams is an American television personality best known for hosting The Wendy Williams Show. She’s also an actress, fashion designer, author, and former radio DJ. Williams was born to parents Thomas and Shirley on July 18, 1964, in Asbury Park, New Jersey. She has two siblings, Thomas Jr., and Wanda. Williams grew up in Ocean Township, New Jersey, where she attended Ocean Township High School. She played the clarinet and competed on the swimming team during high school. Williams graduated from Northeastern University in 1986 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in communications. She minored in journalism.
CAREER
Williams started out as a radio DJ for the Boston-based college radio station, WRBB. After college, she worked at ‘WVIS’ in St. Croix, Virgin Islands. Williams was a disc jockey at the New York urban contemporary station ‘WRKS’ from 1989 to 1994. She won a Billboard award in 1993 for Best On-Air Radio Personality. Williams worked three years at ‘WUSL’ in Philadelphia before moving back to New York in 2001 for a job opportunity at WBLS. She was inducted into the National Radio Hall of Fame in 2009.
Williams is probably best known for creating and hosting The Wendy Williams Show which premiered on July 14, 2008. The show airs on Fox, CW, MyNetworkTV and attracts over 2 million daily viewers. The Wendy Williams Show was nominated for four Daytime Emmy Awards from 2015 to 2016. It was renewed through the 2019-20 season as of 2016.
Williams was a contestant on ABC’s Dancing with the Stars in 2011. She held a supporting role as “Gail” in the romantic comedy Think Like a Man (2012). The film was based on Steve Harvey’s 2009 book titled Act Like a Lady, Think Like a Man. Williams’ television credits include Martin, One Life to Live, Love Triangle, and Drop Dead Diva. She co-produced the film Aaliyah: The Princess of R&B (2014), and created the documentary series Death By Gossip with Wendy Williams (2015).
As an author, Williams is known for fiction books like Drama Is Her Middle Name (2006), Is the Bitch Dead, Or What? (2007) and Hold Me in Contempt (2014).
